Explore SBL's story
Amidst the pressing challenge of climate change, renewable energy emerges as a crucial solution. To advance this cause, the UK Government spearheaded an initiative promoting renewable electricity generation in residential areas. A leading client committed to sustainability partnered with SBL sought to identify suitable rooftops across London and its suburbs for solar panel installation. Leveraging advanced software like Google Earth, Google Maps, and Roofray, SBL efficiently pinpointed south-facing roofs with maximum sunlight exposure, crucial for optimal solar energy generation. This streamlined approach drastically reduced fieldwork by 90%, accelerating the implementation of renewable energy solutions. By prioritizing shade-free rooftops, the project ensures efficient energy generation, aligning with the UK Government’s long-term renewable energy goals. This initiative promises to sustainably power households for the next 25 years, contributing to a greener future.

The primary requirement of this project was to identify south-facing roofs with maximum sunlight coverage, which are ideal for generating solar energy efficiently. To achieve this, SBL utilized software including Google Earth, Google Map, and RoofRay.
These tools enabled the accurate and efficient identification and analysis of
suitable buildings, drastically reducing the need for extensive fieldwork. The
process involved analyzing the orientation, slope, and shading of roofs, with a
focus on those with no shade to avoid energy loss.
This project significantly streamlined the process of identifying suitable buildings for solar panel installation, reducing fieldwork by 90% and saving both time and resources. The expedited process has accelerated the adoption of renewable energy solutions in residential areas.
By selecting roofs with no shade, the project ensured optimal energy generation, as even a 3% shade can lead to a 25% energy loss. This precise method of identification was crucial for maximizing efficiency. Additionally, the project is set to provide sustainable energy for households over the next 25 years, aligning with the long-term goals of the UK Government’s renewable energy initiative.
