Historic Horse Racing Venue Restoration with Scan to BIM

Preserving Architectural Integrity with Structural BIM Techniques

Abstract

SBL successfully executed a Structural Building Information Modeling (BIM) project for a prestigious historic horse racing venue in the United States. The goal was to create an accurate 3D BIM model from point cloud data to aid in the venue’s renovation. Using Autodesk Revit, the team transformed complex data into a Level of Detail (LoD) 300 model, ensuring precision and intricacy. Key challenges included preserving the venue’s historical and aesthetic essence while integrating modern refurbishment techniques. Collaboration among historians, architects, and engineers was essential to meet both structural and conservation objectives. The project provided a detailed 3D blueprint, facilitating better decision-making and planning, safeguarding the venue’s historical character, and enhancing maintenance and preservation strategies for future sustainability.

The Challenge

Some of the main challenges of this project were:

  • The historic nature of the building required exceptional care to preserve its structural and aesthetic essence.

  • Converting point cloud data into a Level of Detail (LoD) 300 model in Revit demanded high precision to ensure accuracy and intricacy.

  • Balancing the building’s historical significance with modern refurbishment techniques required careful consideration to maintain its integrity.

The Approach

Our geospatial team adopted a methodical strategy to navigate the unique challenges of this project. We:

  • Utilized Autodesk Revit, a sophisticated BIM tool, to manage intricate data and create an accurate model.

  • Thoroughly examined and transformed point cloud data into a 3D model, capturing all vital aspects of the steel framework and architectural elements.

  • Fostered a synergistic collaboration among historians, architects, and engineers to ensure the model addressed both structural requirements and conservation objectives.

The Result

The project resulted in the following advantages for our client:

  • Provided a detailed and accurate 3D blueprint for the renovation team, enhancing decision-making and planning.

  • Helped preserve the historical character of the horse racing facility while updating it to meet modern standards.

  • The comprehensive BIM model supports improved maintenance and preservation strategies, ensuring the building’s durability and sustainability.
